Stevie Ray Vaughan was an electric blues/rock guitarist. He began his recording career in 1983 and after 7 short years he had conquered the music world, winning 3 Grammy Awards, and had succeeded in conquering his greatest foe, substance abuse. Though Stevie's genre of choice was blues, he could play anything. In an all-too-short career, he had proven to many that he was not only the greatest electric guitarist alive, but of all times.

In 1990, at the paramount of his career, Stevie was tragically killed in a helicopter accident. The list of those who have paid him tribute reads like the whose-who of the music world. Among them are Stevie Wonder, Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, John Lee Hooker, Gregg Allman, B.B. King, Albert King, Steve Winwood, Jackson Brown, Art Neville, Joe Satriani, Lonnie Mack, Albert Collins, W.C. Clark, newcomers Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Johnny Lang, and countless others including Stevie's older brother Jimmie. Stevie Ray Vaughan received two more Grammy Awards (totaling 5) for his work on the posthumously released CD, Family Style. If you've never heard him play the guitar, then you've never heard it done right.

"Though there have been a million and one Jimi Hendrix wannabes, only one guitarist took the Hendrix legacy to heart and made it his own--Stevie Ray Vaughan. A true Texas blues rocker, Vaughan emerged from the early days of the Austin scene, ascended to the rank of the guitar savior of the eighties, burned himself out on drugs and relentless touring, got sober, and then died tragically in a 1990 helicopter accident. Though he was just thirty-five years old and had released only five albums when he died, Vaughan is considered a major figure in the annals of rock and roll. He rescued guitar-playing from the excesses of the seventies, put the blues back in rock, and staged live shows that left the audience as wound up as a Texas twister."

No doubt, there are still dozens of quality studio recordings, and live performances, that could be used to create a myriad of CDs, but you'll
never get Sony or Jimmie to admit it. For now, they're holding fast to their story that "this is it; there is no more quality material." But if we take a lesson from the past, we can expect that in a couple of years they will make a great "discovery" of some "forgotten/lost" material and once again we'll be told "This is it. There is no more to come. You'd better run out and get this one, because it's the last one ever." Yeah, right. SRV fans hate being lied to, but as soon as something new comes out we'll temporarily overlook the insincerity, the distortion of facts, and the deceitfulness of those controlling the distribution of SRV material. Then, temporarily, the thunderous cries of discontent will be replaced with window-shattering sonic booms as we race
toward the nearest CD outlet. :-)

Box Set Soon!
Jimmie Vaughan and Bob Irwin are now working on the long-awaited box set. Irwin says that the 3 or 4 CDs will
consist of 70% unissued material!
On The Beat
In a radio interview, Chris Layton said that
release date on the box set has been delayed until January. Apparently, Jimmie Vaughan's busy touring schedule has left him little time to work on this project. There is still no word on a title or tracks. Stay tuned!
Bob Irwin is the music producer of the set and has been going through miles of session tapes for his track selection. Bob has worked as a Sony Legacy producer for several years on such projects as "Live At Winterland '68" by Janis Joplin with Big Brother And The Hoilding Company; "Live At The Fillmore '68" by Santana; and the Simon & Garfunkel box set, "Old Friends." I believe he also worked on the Byrds box set. Bob will fly to Austin shortly to join Jimmie Vaughan in listening to even more tapes.
